From the Archives: Jornada Del Muerto 2008

Since our founding, each year Jeff Falk assembles an altar in the tradition of Day of the Dead commemorations. This is the altar from 2008. Patrons were invited to add their own contributions.

  1. A representation of idol worship and superstition. The TV set is symbolic of the spiritually devoid, idol worshiping materialism that is aired every night. The pieces of barbaric folk art inserted in the altar is a testament to the uneducated and spiritually ignorant. The fact that these pices are side-by side the television set indicates that the modern form of idol worship- in the form of materialism, and celebrity worship, is in fact no more enlightened than that of the barbarians of ancient times and cultures. The insertion of the pumpkins, the most undignified of autumn vegitables, used mainly for supertitious or ornamental value- shows the lack of true or spiritual value that superstiopn and modern materialism represents. This ecclective piece represents all that is wrong with society- while it may bring back nostalgic memories of simple life, the undertones of ignorance and false spiritual worship are dangerous and even evil- as represented by the skull.
