Commentary: Bafflement of the Public

"The history of modern art is also the history of the progressive loss of art's audience. Art has increasingly become the concern of the artist and the bafflement of the public." -Henry Geldzahler

Accurate summation by a notable curator, historian, and critic. As artists we have become guilty by association with a lot a meaningless dreck being passed off as art. That's why the audience is baffled, they know intuitively art has gone wrong. It's time to stop all the relativism. There is Truth, there is Beauty, there is Quality. Artists above all need to commit to higher standards for themselves and the works of their peers.
-Richard Bledsoe

  1. That is an accurate statement and a very good summantion of the problem not only with art but with society in general. If only everyone would feel "baffled" with the knowledge that something had "gone wrong". Yet ironically, many are brainwashed ans simply accept the status quo- of whatever is portrayed. From early childhood, people are taught to lose their powers of judgement and conscious. They simply accept whatever flashes across of screen or in print. Basically, television and the media have become their idols. If its in print, in paint, or on the screen, it somehow aquires validity. Free thought and personal discretion no longer matter. The idea that there is an objective truth or standards, are rejected and condemned by so many.
